Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Principles and Practices
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course target individuals who serve their organisations in the capacity of safety officer/coordinator or any individual in a supervisory role who aspire to carry out the functions of safety officer/coordinator. Participants will learn the fundamental principles and practices required to lead the development and implementation of a robust Occupational Health and Safety programme. They will learn how to managing health and safety in the workplace through effective design, development, implementation evaluation and monitoring to assure maximum safety consistent with regulatory requirements and industry benchmark standards.
Module 1
Understand workplace health and safety regulations, roles, responsibilities and importance
- Recognise the importance of the Workplace Health and Safety
- Recognise the regulatory requirements found in the Factories Act and accompanying Regulations
- Discuss the importance of toxic and hazardous substances regulations and policy
- Recognise the importance of Jamaica’s National Fire Protection Codes
- Recognise the roles and responsibilities of both employers and employees
- Recognise the roles and responsibilities of a Health and Safety Committee
- Recognise the roles and responsibilities of a safety representative in the workplace
- Explain the Consequences of poor safety and health practices and the benefits of good safety and health practice
Module 2
Understand the principles and procedures for identifying and controlling hazards and risks
- Identify different types of workplace hazards
- Select and use appropriate measuring tools to detect hazards on the job
- Define key terms associated with risk assessment in the context of occupational health and safety
- Select appropriate risk assessment tools to assess hazards on the job
- Select appropriate methods to determine the levels of exposure affecting employees
- Identify health effects of hazards
- Prioritise the risks of hazards in the workplace
- Identify appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the job
- Use PPEs safely
- Perform safe disposal of PPE
- Explain the importance of various safety signs, signals and barricades
Module 3
Understand Documentation and Communication Procedures and Practice
- Identify accurate and viable sources of information on Occupational Health and Safety
- Apply regulatory requirements develop a health and safety policy
- Develop safe systems of work to meet regulatory requirements
- Develop and implement health and safety emergency response systems and procedures
- Develop appropriate systems to investigate and monitor indoor air quality
- Develop appropriate systems and instruments to communicate safety information to internal and external stakeholders
- Develop appropriate systems and documentation to carry out inspections, reviewing and monitoring of health and safety at work procedures and practice at work
- Develop health and safety action plans
Module 4
Understand accident investigation principles and practices
- Explain the effects of accidents on the organisation and its stakeholders
- Explain the differences between accidents and near misses
- Analyse the use of accident ratios/accident triangles to display the relationship between accidents and outcomes
- Critically analyse various accident causation theories
- Explain the reasons for investigating incidents and accident
- Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate incident and accident response procedure
- Evaluate accident investigation techniques associated with various workplace scenarios
- Explain how to prevent incidents and accidents and take corrective action
- Write reports on accidents and injuries in keeping with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Use web-based tools to report incidents and accidents
Module 5
Understand basic principles and practices involved in the planning, delivering and evaluating of occupational health and safety training
- Assess training needs of new employees
- Use induction plans and relevant documentation to implement the induction process
- Develop plans for training, task briefings and toolbox talks
- Deliver micro-training sessions, task briefings and toolbox talks
- Carry out evaluation procedures
